Xenobia Bailey Speaks With GALA About ‘Funktional’ Design

The Girls Club had the pleasure of welcoming artist Xenobia Bailey. She gave a lecture with Q&A to the ‘Girls As Activists And Leaders’ members. Bailey, whose practice industrializes the visual aesthetic of “Cosmic-Funk,” practiced by African-American homemakers since Emancipation, into utilitarian “Funktional” design is also the artist that created the beautiful mosaics at the Hudson Yards MTA station in midtown Manhattan. Bailey is also an A Blade of Grass fellow working on a project titled ‘Paradise Under Reconstruction’, a project to fabricate prototypes for health aids and services for the needs of African American communities in Seattle and Harlem. More collaborations with Xenobia to come…stay tuned!
