MEMORY LAB ON GOVERNORS ISLAND: PRESENTED BY THE LOWER EASTSIDE GIRLS CLUB
NEW YORK, NY —
On Friday, May 5, 2023 the Lower Eastside Girls Club will open their interactive exhibition, Memory Lab, on Governors Island, alongside 20+ NYC non-profit arts organizations.
Memory Lab explores the inner workings of nostalgia and celebrates our family histories through storytelling. Showcasing a culmination of student work along with interactive rooms, this exhibit seeks to evoke collective memory through story sharing, photography, sound, childhood games, archival textiles, and media.
As an organization that supports young women and gender expansive youth of color, their families, and their community, the Lower Eastside Girls Club recognizes the importance of honoring our histories to radically imagine a brighter future.
Utilizing various mediums, the exhibit will present work from Girls Club youth members, as well as instructors and staff, Sienna Fekete, Erikka James, Emma Camell, Kelly Adams, Amarilis Jimenez, Mia Montalvo, Deanna Greene, L. Vargas, Mary Adams, and Sinjun Strom.
“This project is a celebration of all things memory and storytelling. It’s an opportunity to bring a bit of the Girls Club to the island and be in community with an array of people who come to visit the space. By bringing together the many ingredients that make up Girls Club – sound, visual arts, sustainability, crafts, gardening, sewing, digital arts and media – we’re excited to curate an experience that highlights our multitude of youth and community offerings, ” says Sienna Fekete, Girls Club Senior Arts Manager.
Throughout the five month residency (May 2023 – October 2023) Girls Club will offer opportunities for youth and community to interact with the ever changing exhibit; plants will grow, new art will go on the walls, and the rooms will be filled with sound art recorded on-site with our Sound Instructor. Interactive displays will enable visitors to write notes to loved ones and strangers, or take/leave a note card with a family recipe. Special events to be announced throughout the Summer. This project is generously supported by the MetLife Foundation, which is an instrumental champion of the arts and has enabled the Girls Club to expand our arts programming.
The Lower Eastside Girls Club (LESGC) supports young women and gender-expansive youth of color throughout New York City in leveraging their inner power to shape a better future for themselves, their community, and the world. Through free, year-round, innovative programming, they connect young people with their passions, celebrate their curiosity, and channel their creative energy. Together, they are building a just and equitable future filled with “Joy. Power. Possibility.”
